Allowing you to communicate when nothing else works.
ChinookMesh is an off-grid text messaging system, being put in place by volunteers in Southern Alberta. The aim is to allow for communication even if cell towers go down and internet access is unavailable.
We are using MeshCore firmware on inexpensive radios. You use one of these radios (usually by pairing to it from your phone) and it sends a message out. The system is extended through well-placed repeaters helping messages travel long distances.
I see this as being a very useful way to communicate in the event of a long-term emergency, such as during a prolonged power outage, flooding, fires, or ice storms. Read more at Why MeshCore on AlbertaMesh.
We can already send messages from Stirling to Hill Spring, and intermittently, we reach Lethbridge. With a few well‑placed repeaters we will be able to reach Calgary. Connecting other communities is straightforward — we just need people willing to help.
